Reading an accreditation record: five things to check

A registry record answers most questions if you know which five fields to read.

Whether you are an employer, a learner or a partner institution, a registry record tells you more than a logo on a website ever will. Check these five things.

1. The numbers match

The registration number and certificate number on the record must match the certificate you were shown. If the certificate carries a QR code, scanning it should open the same record.

2. The scope covers what you care about

Accreditation covers the programmes and level stated on the record, and nothing else. Check that the programme you are interested in is within it.

3. The level is the level you were told

Associate, bachelor, master, doctoral and certificate are different routes with different expectations. The record states which applies.

4. The status and dates

Active means in force. Effective from a date means the decision has been made and takes effect on that date. Check the valid-until date as well.

5. Anything the institution discloses

Records state affiliations where they exist. Read them, and read how the decision was taken.
